Davao climber turns over school supplies to IP pupils

MT. KINABALU International Climbathon finisher Mel Andrew Basilio of Davao City Thursday turned over 162 packages of school supplies to Cabagbahangan Central Elementary School, Marilog District.

Basilio, part of the 22-member RP delegation that competed in the 23rd edition of the climbathon in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia on Oct. 24 and 25, presented the school supplies to school principal Edwin Rosales during the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn Thursday.

"Sharing my blessings to under-privileged students has been my advocacy. This is just my way of giving back to others what God has blessed me with. I'm so thankful to all those who supported me in my successful stint in the Climbathon," Basilio, whose Climbathon campaign was supported by Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte, said.

The Philippine Skyrunners Association member also recalled that he also gave away school supplies to another school in Marilog in 2007 after his debut stint in the Kota Kinabalu event following his 1994 outreach activity.

"We are so grateful to him (Basilio) for making good his promise to help the indigenous Manobo children of our school. He saw the need of our Grades 1 to 6 students who lack basic school supplies like paper, pencil, pen and notebook. I hope God will use him to help more children," Rosales said in the vernacular.

Rosales said their school is located in the outskirts of Davao City's Marilog District and can only be reached through walking or by riding on a horse.

Basilio, meanwhile, brought home a medal for finishing the Climbathon before the cut-off time.

Some 500 participants from 33 countries saw action in the Kota Kinabalo race. (MLSA)
