ONE of the anticipated events for this month is the upcoming Mr. Cebu 2009 competition, which will be held at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino on Nov. 28.

Now on its second year, the Mr. Cebu 2009 batch of contestants is a mix of neophytes and experienced young, good-looking, determined, optimistic and hard-working gentlemen who have the passion to be the best they can be and be good role models of the youth and anybody else who look up to them.

They are health buffs who indulge in different kinds of sports including pumping irons at the gym. Some are still students while some have already acquired degrees. This year’s batch includes Jestoni Kyamko Santos, Christian Bryan Salonoy, Jon Neil Oyanguren, Isaiah Mark Barba, Kris Nimrod Cabigas, Nelson Bandoles, Serafin Letim, Don Adlawan, Loreniel Tequin, John Ray Bacatan, Ricardo Flores Jr., Jumar Bilocura, Siegfred Schmidt and Rami Harven Gallego. As in the previous outing, these gentlemen will be wearing clothes designed by Cebu’s cream of the crop in fashion.

Boljoon will celebrate its annual fiesta tomorrow in honor of Nuestra Señora Patrocinio de Maria.

Among the highlights is the Bolho Festival. At the launching last year, the festival showed a lot of promise of catching up with the more established ones in the province. This year’s outing is expected to be more colorful with more participating contingents.

Congratulations to the winners of the “3rd Children’s Popular Music Festival” held last Wednesday, Nov. 4, at the Cebu International Convention Center.

Oslob’s Chastily Jean Nebria won the grand prize of P15,000 and trophy for the song Pasalamat, which she herself penned. Poro’s Ellaine Estrera grabbed the second prize for her Mada’a Ra’g Smile with a P10,000 purse and a trophy to boot. Carmen’s Mary Rose Sarino’s Tingog Kabataan won for her the P7,500 prize and trophy. Danao City’s Sandy Rhey Gomez was voted best interpreter with an accompanying P2,000 prize.

Surprisingly, the top two songs were the ones I cited last week in this column. The grand prize winner was a tribute to a mother while the runner-up was about a positive outlook and meeting every misfortune with a smile. The third prize winner speaks of the need for the youth to stand up, let their voice be heard and act on them for their own good and those of others.

Congratulations too to the rondalla groups from Dalaguete, Minglanilla and Talisay City, which won the top three prizes in the rondalla competition with prizes of P25,000, P20,000 and P15,0000 and trophies, respectively.

Wondering what’s the latest about the four priests who call themselves the Cebu Clergy Performing Artists? They’re into a fund-raising project for the completion of church projects of the St. Martin de Porres Parish Church in Ilihan, Tabogon, Cebu.

Dubbed “Concert for a Cause,” the show will be on Tuesday, Dec. 1, at the Ilihan Sports Complex at 8 p.m. See the show and be part of a worthy undertaking.
