Donaire’s next foe

INTERIM World Boxing Association (WBA) super flyweight titlist Nonito Donaire Jr. is scheduled to headline Top Rank’s “Pinoy Power 3” on Jan. 13 at the Las Vegas Hilton, where he will be facing Mexican Gerson Guerrero.

Donaire Jr., who is ranked No.6 in the pound-for-pound ratings, announced on his website filipinoflash.com that he will be trading leathers with the former world title contender Guerrero on the Top Rank’s blockbuster boxing series, which will also feature top Filipino boxing talents.

However, there are still no details if he will be defending his interim world title or in what weight category he will be fighting.

Donaire Jr., 27, won the interim WBA belt after defeating an overweight Rafael Concepcion last Aug. 15 at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, in the “Pinoy Power 2” boxing event.

Donaire Jr. hasn’t lost a bout since suffering his first career defeat in February 2001 in the hands of unheralded Rosendo Sanchez in his second pro bout.

He won his last 21 fights, including an upset over Vic Darchinyan for the International Boxing Federation flyweight title.

Donaire Jr., who has a record of 22-1 with 14 knockouts, stopped Darchinyan in the fifth round of their world title tussle in 2007.

On the hand, Guerrero is off from a 10th round technical knockout victory over young fighter Enrique Quevedo for the vacant North American Boxing Federation super flyweight crown.

The 32-year-old Guerrrero is currently ranked third in the World Boxing Council.

Guerrero, who is 34-8 with 26 knockouts, has fought the likes of former world champions Daniel Ponce De Leon, Chritian Mijares and Hugo Fidel Cazares.
