Day 13

FRIDAY the 13th—for these four young minds, superstitious or just plain wicked, the show must go on.

Not even a mouthful of bad omen would daunt them from coming out on the 13th day of the month that falls on a Friday. While most people skip this date, these designers are, on the contrary, intrigued by its nature, strange yet beautiful.

In fact, unmindful of the rumored bad luck, they are launching a new breed of designs, inspired by Emily The Strange, a punk fictional character famous for her black-lipped, pale-skinned look—just to suspend a little amusement for Friday the 13th.

Emily might have imposed “black is the new green,” but Harvey Cenit, Manuel Tumaque, Edward Castro, and Cyrus Velasco are using black all throughout, turning up every interpretation imaginable.

Cyrus became a woman for a while (at least in his piece). He pulled off a Diane von Furstenberg-like wrap around dress in laminated black chiffon that summons comfort, above all. But the distinction? The clothes call to a far wider following than the members of a mere insider cult. His design philosophy this time is “spiritual.”

“What inspires me most is the fact that she is supposed to enjoy the fame she has gained, but she chooses to continue what she loved doing silently. I think that her simplicity and humility make her shine among others.

“It actually keeps me reminded to always keep my feet on the ground and never loose myself and my identity in everything I will endure,” reflects Cyrus.

Edward, on the other hand, refuses to draw things literally.

And from its appearance, editing it out was more of a statement than a rule of thumb.

One of the incidental pleasures in his concept is the occasional surprise-sightseeing opportunities: romantic approach to the vagueness of black (always in love, Edward?).

“I decided to do a 50s inspired cut, simple and clean lines. I added a little bit of quirkiness to make it more current,” he says.

“Stretch satin was my choice for this garment. It gives the fabric a polished look, and the great thing about this material is it doesn’t wrinkle easily like ordinary satin or charmeuse.

I mixed in feathers to give it an old world charm.”

Harvey Cenit, a consistent carrier of thought-provoking collection, cedes to a classic Sabrina neckline but inevitably, aims to draw the eyes into the skirt, painstakingly draped by hand. Not that his procuring a Mich Dulce classic, but he’s kicking off some real quality construction.

After all, Audrey Hepburn, his style icon, would not want to wear an unfinished stretch satin dress, would she?

After the show, none of the designers could nail an answer about the truth behind Friday the 13th. But they all believe in love and the eternal sunshine of black: There’s a sense that black is a world isolated and—who knows?—even insulated from any of the realities that motivate most women to buy.
